Delbert Duane Jokela, age 81, of Glendive, Montana, passed away on Thursday, July 2, 2015 at the Glendive Medical Center in Glendive. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, July 10, 2015 at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Glendive with Pastor Greg Lucido officiating. Silha Funeral Home of Glendive has been entrusted with the arrangements.
Del was born on October 17, 1933, in Brainard, Minnesota to John Victor and Alma (Heino) Jokela. He was a second generation American, his grandparents emigrating from Finland around 1900. In May of 1942, his sister Elaine was born. Their family farmed near Pine River, Minnesota until the economy forced John to take a job with Boeing in Renton, Washington. Del Stayed in Pine River with his uncle Leo and aunt Helen Heino until he graduated from Pine River High School with the class of 1951.
Del enter the United States Army in May of 1953, serving during the Korean Conflict. He was part owner of a Standard Oil gas station in Jenkins, Minnesota and worked as an auto mechanic. Del then went to trade school to become an electrician. He worked for several different companies in Great Falls, Montana, Bremerton, Washington, and Minneapolis, Minnesota before working for BNSFRR in Mandan, North Dakota and then finally Glendive where he retired. He was a member of the IBEW Union.
Del met and later married Mary L. Slater on June 9, 1956 and to this union three children were born. Del and Mary later divorced in 1987. Mary passed away on January 17, 2005.
Del was most proud of his twenty-five plus years in Search and Rescue. He joined in 1963 and was elected National Commander from 1982 - 1983. He also served as a reserve deputy for the Cascade County Sheriff's Department. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping.
Del was a kind-hearted, soft spoken man who was always willing to help others. He was easygoing and independent, never wanting to be an imposition to anyone. He liked to laugh and often shared a joke to brighten your day.
He is survived by his son, Gary Jokela of Great Falls; daughter, Shelly (Jay) Morasko of Glendive; son, Brent Jokela of Billings, Montana; sister, Elaine Lapinoja of Pine River, Minnesota; nephew, Greg Farmer; grandchildren, Ashlie (Andy) Contreraz of Billings, Tia (Jake) Senner of Bloomfield, Montana, Jaylin (Nate) Knutson of Bozeman, Montana, Vincent Morasko of Billings, Jeremiah Mannon of Billings, Kyle and Ryan Jokela of Billings; and three great-grandchildren, Elijah Contreraz, Adalynn and Brynlie Knutson.
